There have been technological advances in materials engineering, which allow for more efficient production and more consistent quality, but we still employ similar techniques to the ones our ancestors used during the Bronze Age.
Students of bronze casting will usually work in direct wax, where the model is made in wax, possibly formed over a core, or with a core cast in place, if the piece is to be hollow. If no mould is made and the casting process fails, the artwork will also be lost.

The technique of lost wax bronze casting is one of Man's earliest technologies dating back at least 6000 years and the basic method has changed very little since that time. Modern craftsmen have some technical advantages over those of past times with welding equipment and power tools, efficient gas or oil burners and flexible rubbers for moulding.
